HomeWork

Work: websites for local businesses, built and imagined.

Sites built for clients and brands, then concepts: sites I designed for local businesses before they asked, to show them what theirs could be.

Projects

Websites built for a client or a brand, in use or in build. Each one says where it stands.

01Live

Dr Zoya Ahmed

Business
Dr Zoya Ahmed, cosmetic dentist, Birmingham and Manchester
What was made
Custom design and build · the practice edits its own content

Drag the handle and the same mouth changes under your finger — worth more than two photographs printed side by side. A case can only be published once the practice has ticked that the patient agreed to it.

Read the case study: Dr Zoya Ahmed
‘Real smiles. Carefully considered.’ Three treatment cases, each a close-up of a mouth split down the middle by a draggable handle, labelled Before on the left and After on the right.

APHELION

Business
APHELION, science-led clothing and wall art
What was made
Custom online shop on Shopify · catalogue and product pages

The homepage sells the idea behind the brand, while Shop and Wall Art stay one click away in the header.

APHELION homepage: a large serif wordmark with planets on orbit lines and 'Ten worlds. Ten points of view.'

Kaza Performance

Business
Kaza Performance, vehicle styling workshop, Blackburn
What was made
Custom design and build · seven service pages and a gallery

Two cars, one line, and the quote button in reach. A styling workshop is judged on how the work looks, so the work goes first.

Kaza Performance homepage: 'Supplied. Fitted. Transformed.' in heavy type beside two modified cars photographed head-on in the workshop yard.

Concepts

  • UnpromptedDesigned for a real local business before it asked.
  • AnonymisedNames, numbers, addresses and reviewers are blurred.
  • No claimsA concept shows design, never results.

Selected

  1. Kitchen concept homepage: ‘Made to measure.’ beside the firm’s own photograph of a copper-effect kitchen wall, marked up like a technical drawing with dimension lines and labelled features. Business details are blurred.

Their best kitchen, drawn up like a fitter’s elevation, with dimension lines and labels over the photograph, because made to measure is the whole offer.

  2. Tiling concept homepage: navy with a drawn tile medallion and ‘Tiling and bathrooms in Greater Manchester, laid by’ a blurred name, beside his own photograph of a Victorian geometric hallway floor, joined by a tiled border strip. Business details are blurred.

The page is built from tiles: a Victorian border runs down the seam between the navy and his own hallway floor.

  3. Car tech concept homepage: ‘Starlight roofs, ambient lighting and CarPlay screens, fitted in Bolton.’ beside a drawn car interior with a starry roof, blue light strips and a colour picker, and their own photograph of an Audi RS6 lit green inside. Business details are blurred.

A drawn car interior shows the three things they fit most, all at once, with a colour picker for the light.

Home and building

  1. Lighting concept homepage, dark: ‘Wired right. Left spotless.’ with call, WhatsApp and quote buttons, beside the contractor’s own photograph of a doorway lit at dusk. Business details are blurred.

The page is dark so their own lighting is the only thing giving off light. Every photograph on it is a job they actually did.

  2. Electrician concept homepage: ‘Done properly. Left tidy.’ with a call button and a five-star rating, beside a photograph of hands wiring a consumer unit. Business details are blurred.

Two words his own customers keep using, taken straight from his reviews, and a call button before anything else.

  3. Windows and doors concept homepage: an outlined ‘BEFORE’ and a red ‘AFTER’ either side of a drag slider over their photograph of a tired wooden front door replaced with a red composite one. Business details are blurred.

One door, dragged from before to after: the whole trade in a single gesture.

  4. Windows and fascias concept homepage: ‘90 five-star reviews. Not one salesman.’ beside a customer’s photograph of their house lit at dusk. Business details are blurred.

The headline makes their selling point in six words, over a customer’s photograph of the house at dusk.

  5. Builders concept homepage: ‘Extensions and renovations in Bolton, built by the’ and a blurred family name, over a still of their biggest build, a white modern house. Business details are blurred.

Their biggest build fills the first screen, and the headline signs it with the family name.

  6. Joinery concept homepage: ‘Joiners in Leigh, from skirting boards to full renovations.’ beside a drawn oak door standing open onto a finished living room. Business details are blurred.

The opening is a door they would fit, standing open onto a room they finished.

  7. Driveways concept homepage: ‘Laid by’ two blurred first names above the ratings, beside a customer’s photograph of a new block-paved drive, under a herringbone mark. Business details are blurred.

Two names in the headline: the people who lay the drive are the brand.

Cars

  1. Alloy wheels concept homepage: ‘Alloy wheel refurbishment in Wigan. You keep your car.’ with a box styled as a number plate to search tyres by registration, beside a customer’s photograph of a BMW on refurbished wheels. Business details are blurred.

Tyres start with your registration, typed into a box styled as a number plate.

  2. Car detailing concept homepage: ‘Fall back in love with your car.’ beside a detailed black Audi cut out under rows of studio downlights and a teal arc. Business details and the number plate are blurred.

The car stands under a drawing of his downlit garage, where swirls show.

Beauty

  1. Salon concept homepage, dark with gold accents: 'Light, precisely placed.' beside a serum bottle still life. Business details are blurred.

The main button is a call. Prices depend on skin and area, so talking is the quickest way to book.

  2. Nail studio concept, the bridal page: ‘Bridal nails and henna in Rochdale’ beside her photograph of a hennaed hand with bridal nails on red roses, under a navigation hung like charms on a chain. Business details are blurred.

The navigation hangs like charms on a bracelet, one for each part of the studio.
